There are four types of diabetes mellitus. Type 1, previously called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) or juvenile-onset diabetes, is caused by autoimmune, genetic, and environmental factors. In type 1 diabetes, the body produces no or extremely low levels of insulin.
